The challenge was to fully modernize the viaduct, adapt it to today’s requirements and expand it to two tracks, while preserving its essence, history, and natural beauty.

Frutiger chose to rely on VSL expertise for this demanding project, alongside BLS, the Swiss railway operator, and their structural designer Fürst Laffranchi Bauingenieure. VSL teams carried out the supply and post-tensioning of electrically isolated tendons with segmental couplers, which guarantees full protection from corrosion as well as easy long-term monitoring and inspection of their condition.

The Ernst & Sohn Jury was impressed by the minimal intervention that was done in the natural stone building considering the significant upgrading achieved.
We are proud to have contributed to such an inspiring modernization project, which stands out in terms of sustainability and resource preservation, and in which the existing has been beautifully refined and enhanced.
