Since it was launched in May, the tunnel boring machine has installed 5,635 segments forming a total of 805 rings. Designed specifically for the geology of the Chilterns Hills, which comprise a mix of chalk and flints, Cecilia and Florence are self-contained underground factories. Both TBMs are excavating the two 16-kilometre-long tubes of this twin-bore tunnel. As they progress, they’re digging the tunnel, lining it with concrete wall segments and grouting them into place as it moves forward.

A crew of 17 people is operating each TBM, working in shifts to keep the machines running 24/7. They’re supported by over 100 people on the surface, managing the logistics and maintaining the smooth progress of the tunnelling operation.

Congratulations to Align’s teams, the joint venture composed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine and Volkerfitzpatrick, for this new step!

Stay tuned for the next milestone, the first mile of Cecilia!
