The Gecama wind farm, located in the province of Cuenca, Spain, is the first project for VSL under the supply framework agreement. The wind farm is being developed by the Israeli company Enlight. Nordex Acciona will install a total of 65 turbines, each with the capacity of 4.9MW.

Under this agreement, with its E-WT system, VSL is now an approved post-tensioning supplier for the TC 120 tower, a 120m tall concrete tower. This tower has been internally developed by Nordex Acciona and is currently used worldwide in several continents such as Europe, Latin America and Africa.

Josep Fabra, business development manager says: “On the first large scale application of the E-WT system, we are demonstrating our product and execution capability and our ability to operate in a very competitive environment. Despite the difficult context in terms of supply chain and the very tight site schedules, our prefabrication and site teams are proving VSL is a reliable construction partner and laying a path for a sustainable business future in this sector.”

VSL is supplying and installing the E-WT post-tensioning system for the concrete wind towers, totalling 585 tendons, 120m long each, with a total strands weight exceeding 1’500 tons.
Tendons are prefabricated at VSL Portugal facilities in Benavente and shipped to site. The concrete segments are assembled at the wind farms, post-tensioned, and topped with the rotor and nacelle assembly.

Mathieu Guilé, VSL Business Development Director, explains: ”VSL’s approach to the wind energy sector is part of a broader diversification plan for the group - fully in line with BYCN’s climate strategy. Indeed, despite the growth of the sector, it appears that the global yearly installations of renewable energies fall short to reach the target of net zero emissions set by the major economies for around 2050. At the same time, the world lately experienced dramatic consequences of the climate change (wildfires, floods, heat waves…), and went through the Covid-19 pandemic. We therefore anticipate an accelerated expansion of the sector in the coming years, catalysed by bolder government policies and emergence of new technologies, such as “green hydrogen. When it comes to construction of towers, at a moment when steel supply and shipping become hardly manageable, post-tensioned concrete appears as an obvious alternative. It incidentally improves local content and mitigates carbon emissions for the project.”

Gecama wind farm will provide clean energy to approximately 260,000 Spanish households and prevent emissions of approximately 150,000 tons of CO2 annually. Installation will be completed December 2021. VSL teams will then focus on other projects secured for Nordex Acciona, in Spain and Brazil.
