At the end of May, teams from Align (Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick) began the construction of the Colne Valley Viaduct deck on the high-speed rail line HS2, in the UK. Its construction required a 160-m long machine, called a “launching girder”, to hoist the sections of the concrete deck forming the viaduct arches. Once each section is completed, the machine advances on its own and places itself in position to construct the next section. In all, one thousand segments will be required, each weighing up to 140 tonnes.
