This is a fantastic opportunity to create a world-leading centre for advancing eye health that is in keeping with our reputation for excellence.
Oriel is a joint initiative to transform a two-acre site at St Pancras Hospital to deliver a pioneering eye care, research, and education centre. It would see Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) and Moorfields Eye Charity move from their current sites to collaborate under one roof, harnessing the expertise of all three to deliver an enhanced patient experience and accelerate innovation.
Oriel will be a new, state-of-the-art building with an anticipated gross internal area of up to 46,000m2. Designed with flexibility in mind, it will be able to meet future service requirements and keep pace with changes in technological, medical or research requirements. Its design has been the subject of an extensive programme of engagement with patients, staff and partner organisations to ensure a national standard for accessibility is created.
The project will start under an early work agreement to further develop the design and undertake services diversions and other site preparation this year.
Subject to HM Treasury approval expected later this year, the project will move on to full construction activity starting in early 2023 with it opening to patients in early 2027.
A huge congratulations to the teams involved in securing this project.
