This event marks a symbolic milestone in the life of the tunnel boring machine that, as of September 2022, will dig the Pawtucket tunnel, a 3.5-kilometre tunnel that will provide underground storage for the region's stormwater, wastewater and industrial water.

Built to excavate along the Seekonk River, the TBM is a multi-mode tunnel boring machine, designed to cut through a geological rock formation with widely varying resistance and abrasion characteristics. Once assembled, this giant underground machine will measure 10.30 metres in diameter and will extend over a length of 105 metres.

What's next for the TBM? The delivery of its parts to the site in April, then its assembly in June!
