The Vandellós II Nuclear Power Plant is a power plant located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, in the municipality of Vandellós, in the province of Tarragona, 130 km from Barcelona. The Plant contains a nuclear reactor with a peak power of 1,1 GW, to supply 800.000 homes.
Post-tensioning is crucial to ensure the structural integrity of the containment building. For such a critical operation, the Asociación Nuclear Ascó-Vandellós II (ANAV) chose to trust VSL for its long-standing expertise in post-tensioning systems as well as its ability to perform maintenance operations with the highest level of safety and care under time constraints.
Prior to the works on-site, VSL has performed various preparation jobs, such as: specific formation on Nuclear Power Plant for VSL’s staff, device calibrations, electronic equipment checks, specific tests with the Power Plant’s own machinery, among other works.
On site, the teams started the visual inspections of the post-tensioning including caps, concrete around the bearing plate, anchor heads, bearing plates, wedges and strands, grease.
Then, they destressed the tendons to remove one of the strands. This strand was tested in a lab to verify if the tendons have corrosion default.
After having all the control operations completed, VSL re-tensioned the tendons and re-injected the grease.
The maintenance started in April 2022 and was completed in September.
